Assistant Professor in Middle Period Chinese Culture or Modern Chinese Culture Department of East Asian Languages & Civilizations, Division of the Arts & Humanities Position Type: Faculty Salary Range: $90,000-$120,000; this base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months Chicago, IL Sep 8, 2026 – Oct 8, 2026 Description The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in either middle period China (Six Dynasties to Yuan) or modern China (late Qing to present), with an expected start date of July 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. We are particularly interested in scholars working in literature, cultural studies, and/or intellectual history, and we welcome work that is interdisciplinary, transregional, and/or cross-temporal. The selected candidate will pursue their own research agenda, collaborate with faculty in EALC and other departments, and will teach in both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year on the quarter system; we especially seek candidates able to develop broadly appealing undergraduate courses. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program as well as service on departmental and university committees. Salary Range or Pay Grade: Assistant Professor: $90,000-$120,000; this base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses. This position is benefits eligible. Qualifications The successful candidate will have an active research agenda resulting in publication in leading venues in their field or the potential to develop such a publication record, as well as skills in analyzing primary source texts. Candidates must also have the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will be expected to teach introductory courses in Chinese culture, literature, history, and/or performance, courses in the University’s Core curriculum, and more advanced seminars in their areas of specialization. All requirements for receipt of a PhD in a field related to the search must be completed prior to the start of the appointment.
