The Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science” (EXC 2064) at the University of Tübingen invites applications for a Research Associate in the ERC-funded project APORIA (“Augmenting Poiesis: Relational Inquiries in the Age of AI”). The project explores AI practices in neurosurgery, design, and anthropology, developing a theory of Aporetic Intelligence. The role involves leading the design stream: conducting multi-sited ethnography in Berlin’s digital design landscape, co-convening design sprints, co-developing speculative prototypes, and publishing in anthropology, STS, and design research venues. The position is fixed-term until 31 October 2031, starting 1 January 2027, with opportunities for independent and co-authored publications. Applicants should have a completed or advanced doctorate in HCI, design research, design anthropology, anthropology, STS, or a related field, with experience in qualitative/ethnographic research and prototyping.
